Our Concept

Ravenheart Hardanger – In the footsteps of the Vikings

Eidfjord is a beautiful small village in Hardanger at the end of the Hardangerfjord – the main connection between coast and inland. Situated in the middle of the main axis between Western and Eastern Norway, Eidfjord has been a good place to live and considered a power centre throughout the Iron Age. Are you curious about the local and rich history of this period? Do you feel like a Viking and want to learn more about the daily life of the Vikings in Hardanger? Do you want to acquire more knowledge about authentic food, clothes, and handcrafts from this era? Ravenheart Hardanger welcomes you!

“In the footsteps of the Vikings” is an exclusive guided experience – with max. 12 persons per tour – in “Gamlaløo”, an old barn situated in “Tunet på Haugen, 300 m from the Tourist Office towards the old church. This experience takes about 75 minutes. Join us and use all your senses in our exhibition: see the historical replicas of finds, listen to the music performed on instruments from the Viking Age, touch the variety of fabrics they used to make their clothes and smell the different herbs that were used in the food. We start with a documentary which reveals the local history of the Viking Age after which we guide you through the many copies of finds from this exciting period. Our exhibition is accessible for wheelchairs.

Are you curious about Hæreid, the biggest Iron Age Burial Site in Western Norway and the important role of Eidfjord as a gateway to the Hardangervidda plateau and its resources? Join our guide in authentic Viking clothes on an exclusive 3-hour tour which starts at the Tourist Office in Eidfjord. We first visit our Viking exhibition, after which we go for a walk over the Hæreid plateau. Sense the special atmosphere on this place and find out more about the different burial practices from that era.

Guided tours and events can also be booked outside the regular opening hours, all year round – on request. Don t hesitate to contact us, and we will be happy to inform you about our other flexible possibilities.

Ravenheart Hardanger can tailor your private exclusive guided tour to your needs – for groups or families – as from 12 persons.

We organise eventful, exciting, and varied tours in our exhibition for groups, adapted to their needs. Afterwards, this experience can be combined with delicious food in the «Grindaløo»- café. Do you like to sit around a bonfire and listen to storytelling? Do you want to join a lecture about the local history in “Tunet på Haugen” or at your place? Are you looking forward to participating in Viking Games and test your strength, skill, and team spirit? Have you been dreaming about rowing a Viking ship in the Hardangerfjord? We fix most things, just contact us to hear about how we can tailor a unique historical experience for your group or family.
